A Moment with the Minister
Dear Friends,

My husband and I love to walk around the neighborhood.  Our neighborhood is perfect for
walking.  It is in the shape of a loop and one side of the loop goes up a pretty steep
incline and the other side is a more gradual decline.  Walking the loop twice gives us a
pretty good workout and at the same time gives us time to talk and connect.  It also gives
us a chance to connect with nature and our neighbors.

Yesterday’s walk was different.  Since school has started we got up early enough to walk
and see the children off to school.  We started our walk a bit after six o’clock in the
morning.  The sun had not yet risen and our neighborhood was dark and quiet.  We
passed one house with a wooden stork in the yard announcing a new baby. It was dark
enough that we could not make out the color of the bundle in the stork’s mouth.  Most of
the neighborhood was still asleep.

By the second trip around the sunlight was starting to illumine our neighborhood.  The
stork’s bundle was pink indicating a baby girl had been born.  A cat was waiting at a front
door to be let in.  Dogs which had been let out into the back yard barked as we passed
by.  Children were getting ready for school.  Pets were being fed.  The day was beginning.

As we walked down the street I realized I was witnessing the awakening of our
neighborhood.  I thought about how that was a beautiful analogy of what is occurring on
our planet.  Charles Fillmore often talked about how humankind is awakening.  He
described awakening as “becoming conscious of the things of Spirit, or God”.  One
hundred years later we are still awakening to our divinity within.  We are becoming more
and more conscious of our planet and our neighbors on a global scale.  We are starting
to see the light and walk in the light.  But it is a process – moment by moment, year by
year.

Each one of us is wiping the sleep from our spiritual eyes.  We are growing and evolving
into our Christ selves.  It does not come in a flash, but gradually over time.  Our work is to
continue to awaken to Spirit through prayer, meditation, study, and practice AND to know
a new day is dawning for us and our world.

“Besides this, you know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to
wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became
believers; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the
works of darkness and put on the armor of light…”
Romans 13:11-12

Love and Light,

About our Minister
Rev. Sheryl Padgett had always had an interest in how things worked. So, naturally,
engineering was the logical choice of careers. After fixing Air Traffic Control Radar in
the Air Force for four years, she pursued a degree in computer science. This led her to
a position with General Dynamics working on guidance software for the Atlas missile.
That position didn't come easy. There were no female engineers working at the launch
pad at that time and the launch conductor wanted it to stay that way. Finally, she was
hired into the Design Engineering group under a different manager. She pursued her
Master's Degree in Engineering Management. "I thought I was going to be in
engineering for the rest of my life," she says.

There were different plans for Sheryl. After attending a Unity church for only two
months she woke up with an uneasy feeling that she was supposed to be a minister.
This notion terrified her. After talking it over with the minister, she decided to take the
two years of classes necessary to apply for ministerial school, all the time hoping it
wouldn´t lead to the ministry. But everything fell into place. At the end of two years she
was one of the twenty-five students chosen out of three hundred applicants. Knowing
now that it was meant to be, she turned in her resignation as an engineer and became
a minister.

Rev. Sheryl Padgett was Ordained and Licensed as a Unity Minister in 1997. I
absolutely love the ministry, she says. She was the minister of the Unity Church of
Christianity in Appleton, Wisconsin for five years and is now the minister of Christ
Church Unity in Augusta.  She uses her experiences as an engineer and her science
background to explain spiritual principles in a practical way.
