What is Unity?
History of the Unity Movement Unity was founded in 1891 by Charles and Myrtle Filmore. In 1886 Myrtle became ill with tuberculosis which she had been told she inherited. Charles and Myrtle were searching for answers when they heard that Dr. E.B. Weeks was lecturing Kansas City. They attended the lecture and Myrtle left with the idea, "I am a perfect child of God and therefore do not inherit sickness." She worked with that statement in prayer and two years later was completely healed of tuberculosis. People started asking her for prayer help. Charles, being a logical man, started intense study of healing and religions in an attempt to help him understand the healing his wife had experienced. Meanwhile, the Fillmores held a healing service once a week in their home. This practice eventually became Silent Unity. Charles started a printing and publishing company and named it Unity in 1891. The first issue of Unity magazine was published that year. Wee Wisdom, a spiritual magazine for children, was first published in 1893 for the children. The Unity society of Practical Christianity was incorporated In 1903 and the Unity School of Christianity was incorporated in 1914. The Unity Village site was purchased in 1920. The first issue of the Daily Word was published in 1924.
Silent Unity Silent Unity started praying together in 1890 and has been in continuous prayer (24 hours a day) for more than 80 years. Each year Silent Unity receives about 1 million calls and 3 million pieces of mail asking for prayer and reporting the results of prayer.

Philosophy Unity has no creed or dogma that the members are asked to follow. People are invited to accept what helps them to grow spiritually. Unity teachings are based on the Bible. We view the Bible as our textbook. We believe that it holds our own personal spiritual truth. We believe that there is a deeper and sometimes hidden meaning to Bible passages. Unity is a positive approach to life. We see God not as an anthropomorphic God, but as Spirit, everywhere in the universe, visible and invisible. In an attempt to define the beliefs that Unity holds, five ideas have been defined as Unity principles.
Unity Foundation Principles 1) There is one power in the universe - God is good, omnipotent. We believe that God is creator and source of all good. We do not believe in any existence of an opposite power of God. Evil or the appearance of evil is caused by human kind's misuse of Gods laws. We attempt to align ourselves with God and God is good.
2) God is individualized in each one of us as the Christ. (Col. 1:27, as revealed by Paul, Christ in you, the hope of Glory). We believe that within each one of us is our higher self in the image and likeness of God. Jesus demonstrated and expressed this Divine potential. We are all children of God as Jesus was and to express this divinity is to live life as demonstrated by Jesus. (John. 14:6 I am the way, and the truth, and the life).
3) We believe that our minds are our link with God and that our thoughts affect our body and circumstances. The law of mind action states: thoughts held in mind produce after their kind. (The world was created by the word of God. Heb. 11:3). We believe that every thought, word and act has an effect on our life. When we think God-thoughts and speak words of love and truth, our lives are happier and filled with peace. When we depart from the idea that God is our source and focus on negative thoughts then negativity is manifested in our lives as hardship and sorrow.
4) We believe in the power of affirmative prayer and meditation. (Whatever you ask for in prayer you will receive, if you have faith. Mt. 21:22). Prayer is the method through which we change ourselves and our perception. Prayer brings forth wisdom, healing, prosperity, and good. We don't beg or beseech God in our prayers; we pray with the knowledge that our prayers have already been fulfilled. Unity stresses the importance of daily prayer and meditation to stay open to God's guidance.
5) A person must not only know and understand Truth principles but demonstrate them in their lives. Unity is more of a teaching than a creed. We do not believe that this is all the Truth or the final Truth. We believe in the search for truth and keeping Unity an open-ended religion. The individual is free to accept as much or little of these teachings and teachings of others. This does not mean that Unity also accepts different teachings as their own. Unity is a Christian religion. Unity teaches to look within for the answers. We believe in one power - God.
